Every so often in life we see the need to find ways to remember things as we have so many things to remember and neither the mind nor the time to remember them. What we need is a method – a memory aid. Memory aids are called mnemonics. Of all the sites I have come across the best and most comprehensive can be found at eudesign.com/mnems/_mnframe.htm.
Why is that site so great? Well, most sites will just give you a few mnemonics in a few fields. However, this site is so all-encompassing covering from “Astronomy” to “Time.” Let me give you some highlights.
This section gives mnemonics for the planets (their size and order), the planets, the stars and other things.
Biology and Nature This section of the page covers the bones of the body, the brain lobes, camels, elephants, vitamins, weather forecasting among other things.
Business This touches on how to choose a domain name, how to do presentations and sales’ techniques.
There are mnemonics for periodic elements, gases etc in the Chemistry section.
Geography and Geology This section deals with the continents, the Great Lakes, the longest rivers, the seven hills of Rome and related things.
This category deals with certain battles and wars in history like Napoleon’s battles, kings and queens, the Pilgrim fathers, Greek philosophers, Roman Emperors, Seven Wonders of the World and the like.
Language and Literature Language and Literature gives mnemonics for novels by Jane Austen, Conjunctions, French numbers, French Irregular Verbs, spelling, etc.
This category gives mnemonics for decimals, fractions, the laws of probability, Pythagoras’ Theorem, Sine, Cosine and Tangent, Square Roots of integers etc.
If it is one area that people know mnemonics for it is music. However, it goes beyond the usual and gives the order of chords as "Frederick Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle " (FCGDAEB). It also deals with Sharps , flats and Staves.
This comprehensive site also has the following categories:
Mythology, Physics, Religion, Society, Sports and pastimes, Time and the last category is called “Various Other” which includes traffic rules, metric lengths, certain films, to name a few.
Both computers and people suffer from lack of memory so you may not always be able to “ram” and Cram things into your head. Why not user memory aids or mnemonics to help you in the various walks of life?
